Foreign media: The Trump administration threatens to impose a 50% tariff on imported copper, prompting a warning from the world's largest copper producer.
On July 9th, US President Trump announced that the United States will impose a 50% tariff on imported copper, effective from August 1, 2025. According to a report by the Financial Times on the 20th, with less than two weeks left before the above-mentioned tariffs take effect, Maximiliano Pacheco, chairman of the Chilean National Copper Corporation, the world's largest copper producer, warned that the US tariff measure is causing market anxiety. The Financial Times reported that Trump did not specify whether the 50% tariff imposed by the United States applies to refined copper, semi-finished products, or copper ore. Mining companies and industrial users have many questions about the timing and nature of these tariffs. Pacheco said that this uncertainty is difficult to deal with. "Some of our customers are anxious and they need to understand how this will end." Pacheco said in an interview.
