Eggs, beef, and tomatoes are taking turns to increase in price, as "tariffs" are hitting Americans' dinner tables.
The Associated Press reported on July 18 that beef prices in the United States have reached a record high. According to US government data, the average price of ground beef in June increased by nearly 12% compared to last year, while the average price of unprocessed beef ribeye steaks rose by 8%. Over the past 20 years, beef prices in the US have been steadily increasing, while the number of cattle has been steadily decreasing for decades. As of January 1 of this year, there were 86.7 million head of cattle and calves in the US, the lowest number since 1951. Currently, the US imports over 4 million pounds of beef annually, and Trump's tariff policies may become a new factor driving beef prices even higher.
