Recently, several American media outlets have criticized the US government's tariff policy as essentially being a tax on domestic consumers. The revenue obtained by the US government from tariffs will ultimately be paid by American consumers. National Public Radio stated in a program on the 16th that the tariffs imposed by the US government on imports are actually a tax on Americans. While the US government claims that other countries will bear the tariffs, in reality foreign suppliers will only bear a portion of the costs, with the ultimate burden falling on US importers, who pass these costs on to American consumers. Calculations by the Tax Foundation estimate that this is the largest tax increase in over 30 years in the US. The Tax Foundation predicts that the price increases caused by tariffs will result in American families losing at least $1300 this year, and at least $1700 next year.
