Xinhua Commentary | Making mistake upon mistake in a crisis will only result in total failure

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi previously openly declared that a "Taiwan contingency" could constitute a "survival crisis" for Japan and is linked to the exercise of collective self-defense rights. She has not reflected on her mistakes, refused to withdraw her erroneous statements, and recently attempted to find legal basis from the trash heap of history, bringing up the invalid "Treaty of San Francisco" in an attempt to stir up the so-called "Taiwan undetermined status". This practice is essentially using a new mistake to cover up a previous mistake, leading to compounding errors. There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an integral part of Chinese territory that cannot be separated. This is an iron-clad fact that cannot be distorted. The Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation clearly stipulate the return of Taiwan and the Pescadores Islands stolen by Japan to China. When Japan signed the surrender documents, it promised to "faithfully carry out the obligations stipulated in the Potsdam Proclamation." This series of internationally binding documents confirm China's sovereignty over Taiwan. In 1949, the government of the People's Republic of China replaced the government of the Republic of China as the sole legitimate government representing all of China. This was a change in government without a change in China as an international legal subject, and China's sovereignty and inherent territory have not changed. The government of the People's Republic of China naturally fully enjoys and exercises sovereignty over China, including sovereignty over Taiwan.
