The Bohai Sea and Liaodong Bay have entered the sea ice period this winter.
Affected by cold air, the temperature and sea temperature in the Bohai Sea and Liaodong Bay have dropped significantly in recent days. According to satellite remote sensing information on sea ice from the North Sea Forecasting and Disaster Reduction Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources on December 2nd, sea ice distribution has appeared in the shallow waters of the river mouth in Panjin City and Yingkou City, Liaoning Province, at the bottom of the Liaodong Bay, marking the beginning of the sea ice season in the Bohai Sea and Liaodong Bay this winter. According to forecasts, around mid-January 2026, the Liaodong Bay, Bohai Bay, and the northern part of the Yellow Sea will experience a severe ice period. The maximum outer edge of sea ice in the Liaodong Bay may exceed 60 nautical miles, and the area covered by sea ice will exceed 10,000 square kilometers. Severe sea ice will have varying degrees of impact on mariculture, fishing, maritime transportation, port operations, daily necessities transportation, offshore oil and gas extraction, and the lives of island residents.
