UK announces establishment of AI biosecurity lab

The UK government announced on the 24th that it will establish an AI biosecurity laboratory, using cutting-edge AI technology to strengthen the monitoring of and response to biological threats, and to accelerate the development of medical countermeasures such as vaccines and drugs. In a communiqu released that day, the UK government said that the development of AI technology is creating new opportunities for scientific discovery and disease research, but increasingly capable AI systems may also bring new biosecurity risks and lower the technical barriers to carrying out harmful biological activities. To strengthen resilience against biological threats, the government decided to establish the AI biosecurity laboratory.
