On Thursday, U.S. President Trump announced that the United States will impose tariffs on imported drones and their components, with most of the tariffs set to take effect in 21 days. Trump stated that this move is a necessary measure to reduce America's dependence on foreign supply sources.
According to the announcement signed by Trump on Thursday, the U.S. will impose tariffs ranging from 10% to 100% on imported drones and their components, citing national security threats as the reason. The announcement specifies that a 100% ad valorem tariff will be applied to drones with highly sensitive specific sizes or specific functions, as well as to docking stations for such drones and certain critical components. This category includes drones with a maximum takeoff weight exceeding 25 kilograms and drones equipped with thermal imaging capabilities. Additionally, a 25% ad valorem tariff will be applied to certain smaller drones and other drone components that do not have specific functions.
The announcement also stipulates that a 15% ad valorem tariff will be imposed on drones and components from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, and Switzerland. Furthermore, a 10% ad valorem tariff will be imposed on drones from the United Kingdom, provided their hardware, software, and technology are primarily sourced from the aforementioned countries and regions, as well as the United States. The regulations state that the above tariffs will take effect 21 days after signing. For non-highly sensitive drone components, the tariffs will take effect 180 days after signing.
In response to this news, U.S. stocks related to the drone industry rose in after-hours trading. As of press time, Unusual Machines (UMAC.US) was up nearly 7%, Red Cat Holdings (RCAT.US) was up over 3%, Ondas (ONDS.US) was up nearly 2%, and AeroVironment (AVAV.US) was up over 1%.
